The Winners

July 7th, 2009 at 6:16 pm by jezz

Our finale in the Sports Bar in Barcelona went very successfully, with all teams looking happy, enthused and rewarded that they made it all the way to the big Catalan city.

Our story isn’t quite finished yet as there are more photos and tales of the final day to come,. But currently we’re driving back to England and I have very low battery and our car power inverter has exploded. So, for now, I will be brief and announce the winner.

In 3rd place: Mello Yello

In 2nd place: The Three Musketeers (as the A team)

The winners in 1st place: The Wino Dreamers (as the Bee keepers)

A few other prizes were given out for other categories.

The Longest Drive award goes to Team Deathmatch who made their way to Holland on day 1 which means they went in to 6 countries in one day.

The Wackiest Car award goes to Banger to the Future for their DeLorian time machine car.

The final scores in full:

  13. Darren (Team Fire Engine) Says:

    Hi Everyone.
Well done to everyone who went on the rally. Great bunch of people and a fantastic time had all round. Will be back next year with any luck.
I agree, at least once in your lifetime you should be on the wacky rally.
After nearly 3000 miles, 7 countries & thousands of toll booths we finally made it back to Accrington at 16:32hrs on Thursday 9th July. The fire engine ran superb all the way better than the 2 of us really, however after 2730 miles, 70 miles short of home on the M6 just after the A500 junction we fractured an injector pipe. As luck would have it we were carrying a spare anyway so not too much trouble.
Congrats to all the winners, you deserve it and hope to see you all next year. Am now trying to think of what to go barmy to Barca in though???

  14. Chris (2 Slow NOT 2 Serious) Says:

Hey everyone! Had an amazing time! Great experience! Would definitely do it again some time. Just back in the UK this evening after an extended stay in Barcelona and then Calella (along the road from Barcelona). Got some great final shots of our car in front of Antoni Gaudi’s Church in Barcelona before handing it over to a local scrappy (very sad to see the old girl go :-( what a great car she was! lol!) Sorry i never got to say goodbye properly to some of you on the last evening, especially the Sticky team boys from Belgium….I can only presume you guys got lost in Barcelona and never made it to the sports bar!? :-D oops! Hope to see some of you again on another crazy hair-brained WACKY RALLY event somtime in the future. Until then, Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  15. CAICY Says:

WELL DONE MARK AND THE LADS! BUT CAN YOU WIN NEXT YEAR AGAINST YOUR NEPHEWS TEAM?!?! LOL.

The scores after day 3

July 6th, 2009 at 10:03 am by jezz

Since the last score update we have marked the challenges for day 3 and also awarded the bonus points to each team. There are a total of 1000 points available for each team, broken down in to 4 categories. A max of 250 for paint/sticker work to the car. Maximum 250 for fancy dress costumes. 250 maximum for attachments to the car. And finally 250 points max for added wackiness.

Congratulations to all the teams who scored maximum points on the bonus points. There are 9 teams who were awarded the full 1000 points. You can see who they are in the table below.

Also, 3 teams scored the full 1800 points on day 3’s challenges.  Congratulations go to The Three Musketeers, Mello Yello and the Finger Bangers who all achieved max points.

So, on to the scores so far. The Wino Dreamers are currently in the lead by a reasonable margin. With only the last day of challenges left to go, can they be beaten? The competition is still out for 2nd and 3rd place though, there are lots of teams who can get their hands on the money prizes if they pull in a high score today.

Sunday night and Monday morn

July 6th, 2009 at 9:28 am by jezz

Day 3 took us from Sauze down past Monaco and along, back in to France, to the town of Arles. We were sat outside marking the challenges, around the corner from the Australian bar. Pictures of day 3 will be up on the blog soon.

The final day of the rally (day 4) kicked off this morning (Monday) from the McDonalds car park on the edge of Arles town.

Today’s drive takes us down to Lloret de Mar in Spain just outside of Barcelona. We will all be meeting up there for ice cream and a swim in the sea, and maybe a bit of marking of the final day’s challenges. From Lloret de Mar we will then be attempting a convoy for the last kilometers in to Barcelona for the final ceremony.

Also, a shout out for today from all of us organizers on the Wacky Rally:

Happy Birthday today for our dearest little f-pig back in ‘sunny’ blighty. Make sure kettle’s on for Thursday morning. – Love all from the Mondeo massive x

Sunday morning

July 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm by jezz

The weather is hot and stunning up in the Italian mountain as day 3 of the rally begins in Sauze d’Oux. All of our cars are parked in a reserved car park in the town centre.  All the locals are very interested in what’s going on as they have a look around at all the wacky vehicles.

Today’s rote takes us down the mountains to drive through Monaco and then west, back in to France, to the town of Arles, where we will be scoring today’s challenges.

Sauzeing it Up

July 4th, 2009 at 6:06 pm by jezz

I’m sitting here at Paddy McGinty’s in Sauze d’Oux (pronounced sow-ze-do). The wacky crew arrived a couple of hours ago and now we are set up for the teams to arrive.

Tonight we’ve got the pub to ourselves with a buffet laid on for 8 o’clock. Let’s see how the Italians react to the wacky ralliers!

Saturday morning

July 4th, 2009 at 5:55 pm by jezz

Saturday morning kicked off from Thun’s Ice Rink car park. The weather this morning is hot and sunny, a nice contrast to the rainy evening we had last night.

Each morning there is a prize for the previous days challenge. (This is a separate prize than the main prizes to be handed out on Monday evening). There was a clear winner from yesterday’s challenges, who have received their money prize. Congratulations to the Vibrating Bum Faced Goats!

Today’s drive is stunning mountain passes through Switzerland and in to Italy. Our destination is the ski-resort town of Sauze d’Oux. Tonight Sauze will be the host to us Wacky Ralliers.

Here’s some photos from our morning in Thun:

Friday night

July 4th, 2009 at 5:51 pm by jezz

The first days journey took us from Lille in France to Thun in Switzerland. We arrived in Thun at 6 in the evening and set up our flags and scoring station down by the weir in the town centre, with lake and mountain views.

Out of the 60 teams, around 40 turned up with challenges to be scored during the evening. The rest will be scored on saturday to be added to the leader table.

Ali’s update:

The first night of the rally and Thun welcomes us with a torrential downpour once more, safely under canvas we awaited the arrival of teams. Later than expected teams rocked up with various objects and photos of today’s challenge.  The usual debates ensued for the evening it seems the Barcelona bunch like to debate harder than most (my voice will be gone by Arles again). No major stories of woe although a couple of breakdowns that got fixed, other than that alls well in Switzerland apart from the slight uncertainty about the weather.

And finally, let’s see what’s in the blog post box:

Danny from Police Acadamy 51
To Louise, I am really sorry I forogt the mobile phone! Love you lots.

From Help for Homies
Thanks Team Big Nose for breaking their nuts!

Richard and Brett from Full English
It has been a long journey but so far the car is fine! We’re feeling tired but are enjoying it. Hello to everyone at home!

The Kick Off

July 3rd, 2009 at 11:14 am by jezz

An early start in Lille this morning to kick off Barmy to Barcelona 2009.

Today’s route takes us to to Thun in Switzerland (pronounced Toon). It’s a long old drive to get us in to the beautiful Swiss landscape, but it’s worth it for the scenery to come.

The yellow envelopes containing today’s challenges have been handed out. The teams have got to keep their fingers on the shutter to score full marks today. Who will score maximum points at win a prize tomorrow morning?

Thursday night

July 2nd, 2009 at 11:22 pm by jezz

Here’s a blog post from Mikaela:

The tables are filling up fast at Café Oz and given the high temperatures, most people are outside, spilling onto the pavement. There is a sea of yellow, rally issue t-shirts dominating the bar, with various additions, including an army helmet and individual team t-shirts.  Looking forward to seeing the costumes and the wacky cars tomorrow morning….

Team, ‘The Gents’, entered to a round of applause, as they made it to Lille against all the odds. As they drove onto the ferry in Dover they whacked the bottom of the car and put a hole in the sump. The resulting flood of oil was definitely not a good sign, but fellow rally drivers lent a hand and they limped to the starting point. Bets on whether they reach the finish line?

Team Jon start the rally with a 3km push after running out of fuel, at least they have half a chance of finishing the rally healthier than they started it, a luxury the organizers and drivers will certainly not have.

Looks like an interesting start and promises to be an interesting rally.

  1. Maureen Blower Says:

Adrians mom looking to trace where CARKEYS & CLUTCH maybe. Did they make the Lille start? after the later ferry crossing due to traffic holdup. Come on Adrian & Kieren, good luck, lets have some news of how you are doing.

Registration in Lille

July 2nd, 2009 at 11:22 pm by jezz

There’s also a heat wave in France here tonight. The weather is beautiful. The channel was completely calm when we crossed  at lunch time, and we got into Lille by late afternoon.

So far, so good for us organizers on the start of Barmy to Barcelona 2009. But it hasn’t been an uneventful start to a rally. Ali and Rob are in their Bling Bling Pimp Machine as usual, with an added guest, Mikaela. Jamie and I are joined by Claire and James. We were meant to be in our Renault Espace that starts with a screwdriver – instead we are in a hire car as the starter motor and electrics burned out yesterday afternoon! Ali is feeling sorry for himself for wrecking our wacky car. We wont let him forget about it for a while yet.

The registration is taking place at the Australian Bar, Café Oz, in Lille city centre. All the teams are signing themselves in and meeting the rest of the crowd.

We’ve been out with the cameras taking pics of the teams as they arrive. I’ve uploaded the best for the blog – see if you can recognize any faces.

It’s an early start tomorrow at 7.30 to kick off the rally from a Lille park. We will see all the teams in the morning – hopefully all in one piece.

Wednesday evening

July 1st, 2009 at 8:20 pm by jezz

A message from Ali:

Tis the eve of the start of the Barcelona Rally. I am suffering from a hangover sent by Satan himself, I’ve just blown up the Espace we had for the staff and me and Rob keep arguing about the third day challenge – all is as it should be on the eve of a wacky rally : )

The Barmy Blog 2009

June 30th, 2009 at 5:20 pm by jezz

Hello everyone and welcome to the Barmy to Barcelona 2009 blog.

It’s a couple of days before all our teams make their way to Lille, France for the registration on Thursday evening.

We here at Wacky HQ are doing the preperations for the Barmy to Barcelona rally. Rob’s hogging the printer as he prints off  the challenege sheets for the days ahead. Claire’s on envelope duty. Ali is trying to sort out car registraton documents for the Wacky Wagon. And I’m putting the final touches on this new shiny blog. Do you like the yellow? Bring on the Barcelona sunshine!

Over the next week we will be updating the blog with stories and pictures from the rally. We will be collecting digital camera pics at the end of every evening and uploading the cream of the crop.

But we don’t have to wait until Thursday to get this blog active. Please click on the red link below and post a comment. How’s your car getting along? Have you sorted your fancy dress costumes? Looking forward for the sunshine?

  1. Andy (VBFG) Says:

1 day to go and still sorting loads of stuff out, no sign of the map, anyone know where Dover is ???
This is going to be funny !!!
    Good luck all
    Andy

  2. Peter (VBFG) Says:

Looking forward to it. I wish we had got a car with aircon now! Still, we have a goat.
    Pete
    P.S. Dale is a crunt!

  3. Steve (VBFG) Says:

Just cut some CD’s for the trip with the aid of a nice bottle of wine. I fail to see how this is going to be anything other than one of the funniest (and most expensive) weekends ever!! Bring it on! I’ll worry about packing & and whether the car works or not tomorrow :)

  4. Pete (VBFG) Says:

Are we the only people on this rally? One car and three eejuts!

  5. Banger to the Future Says:

Less than 24 hours now until we set off in our old banger with no aircon for the biggest drive ever in the warmest weather EVER!!!! Can’t wait – WOO HOO

    See you all in Lille.

  6. Sent From Coventry Says:

Really looking forward to it. Hope there is plenty of petrol over there, the car is very thirsty.
Still waiting for our Tshirts to arrive,

  7. jezz Says:

    Good morning from Wacky HQ,

To answer a couple of questions, there’s at least 2 more cars and 7 eejits coming in the organiser crew – that is assuming our cars make it to Lille. Actually, there are 60 cars coming on the rally. So far 43 teams have completed the online registration form, so there still 17 teams out there not registered. One more day to sort out your MOTs and insurance!

We’ll be handing out t-shirts and large car stickers in Lille, so don’t expect anything extra in the post.

I’ve just been checking out the weather for the next few days and it’s looking like a scorcher. I hope everyone has packed their flip-flops.

  8. Ian (Forget Wally WTHAW?) Says:

Well I cannot wait to get going. Took the car out for a test drive with my 7 yhear old daughter last night. When I pulled it back in the garage I asked her if she liked it. Her response:

    “It’s embarrassing”

When did I get to the point where I think I’m cool but my daughter is simply embarrased by me?
One day she’ll realise how cool I am!!!

Anyway the car looks beautiful, a 21 year old Saab 900i. Top of the range no less. It has electric wing mirrors (the passenger one still works), power steering and (just what we need for this trip to Spain in July) heated seats!
The inside of the car stinks already I dread to imagine how bad it is going to get with four lads in it for four days and no air con!

Anyway nice and early start for two of us tomorrow, 4am, Scarborough to Barnet to collect the other two and then Barnet to Dover for a 12.25 crossing to Calais. Then straight to Lille for many beers and registration.

Can’t wait to meet everyone else, see you tomorrow!

  9. The Virginia Slims Says:

4 more eejuts saying hello – we were known as team Being Borg, but decided to change our theme last minute, so we’re now the virginia slims.
Car done, Costumes nearly done, paperwork done, need to do compilation cd of ‘guilty pleasures’ to annoy the c*** out of my team mates with :-)
    See you all sooooon

  10. Darren (Team Fire Engine) Says:

Nearly ready now. Hotels booked, Ferry Booked. Just a small oil change, 27 litres of the stuff. As far as eejits go i think the 2 of us qualifly there.
I,m also hoping for plenty of cheap fuel. 9 litre, and 16 miles to the gallon, thats thirsty.
    See you all in Lille

  11. Chris Says:

2 more eejits here with a hearse that hopefully will hold together!!! Sorry Darren, but petrol looking a tad more expensive than it is here :-)
has anyone booked anywhere to stay yet??

  12. Olie (Team Finger Bang) Says:

Looking forward to it now =D booked up everywhere we’re staying, flights booked, GPS working (easy way out), car nearly finished – only broken down 3 times so far =P
When are people traveling to dover? – our ferry is at 12:25 thursday

  13. Ian (Forget Wally WTHAW?) Says:

Ollie we’re on the same ferry….sea france at 12.25, could grab a sly beer on the ferry if you want?

  14. Peter Says:

3 more eejuts saying hello! 2 guys and a girl..

Just finished tying up my bumper sorting the car tax and the paint job turned out really well. Who said leaving everything to the last min was a bad idea.

Am I the only one going from Dover to Dunkerk? Im catching the 12.30 ferry if anyone is on. Look out for the time west wood pimped to max Renault.

  15. Peter Says:

Oh, and the girl in team ‘2 guys and a girl’ wants to know if she will see any other females suffering from spending 5 days crammed in a car full of smelly guys?!

  16. Claire Says:

Can’t wait to get started! I will be joining the organiser crew of ‘eejits’ this year, my first rally! I’ve seen the state the guys return in from previous rallies and I’ve been watching the blog and pictures on the site so I know what a great time you’ll all have. Just don’t forget to pack your sunblock – it’s gonna be a hot one!!!!! Keep your comments coming!

  17. Lesley Says:

Bleddyns’ mummy and all in Camp Office, Brecon, wish Help the Homies all the luck in the world. They are going to need it!!

  18. Ash - Cammys Crew Says:

    Hi Guys,

I can’t sit in this office any longer so i’m writing this then getting outa here for two weeks.

Anyone sailing to dunkirk? We’re on the 14:00. We’re in a fire engine / rover and will probably be making alot of noise.

See you in Lille (Fingers Crossed)

  19. Hot Fuzz 4 Kids Says:

    Hi all,

Well we’re sorted. The Rover engineering has passed the various rigorous road tests and we’re confident that it should get us off this Island, what happens after that is anyones guess!! Anyway we’ll be on the 1400 hours Dover to Dunkirk Norfolkline Ferry. You won’t miss us as we’ve got the LAPD theme car. Looking forward to the trip and meeting the flock of fellow mad pistonheads along the way.

Best wishes and see you in Lille.

  20. Mark Porter Says:

I hope everybody has a fantastic time. Its such a laugh I did the last Barcelona rally and won wackiest car trophy worth having takes pride of place on the mantel piece. I have been imformed by a reliable source that our Cow car that we gave away is still being driven around Barcelona.
Good luck and enjoy yourselves Mark and Sarah Team Jolly Jalopy

  21. The Virginia Slims Says:

To Peter (2 guys & a girl) – we’re 2 girls & 2 guys – so she won’t be the only girl in with the boys, at least there’s free space in the back of your car!
There are 3 cars coming from our office, we’re all on the Dover – Dunkirk at 18.00 – cutting is suitably fine and optimistic about making the bar before midnight…

  22. Justin (Team McQueen) Says:

We’re on the 3.25pm Dover to Calais ferry (SeaFrance) – anyone else on that? Looking forward to it – see you all in Lille!

  23. Dave Says:

Team ” I Dont Know ” will be on the 1000am ferry from dover to calais 2moro, europe watch out!!……..absolutey cant, me and mike are driving abroad virgins so should be interesting. see u all there

  24. Neil (The Littletons Lads) Says:

Well, one of our three pulled out and he was the one who sugested it. We have tried to paint the car but had no idea what we were doing without our team mate, and have not yet thought about fancy dress. On the plus side the car seems to actualy drive (miracle) and we have all our documents sorted.

I am going to finish packing now, and I am going to get loads of cheap bottles of water from Tesco.

Good luck all and see you tomorrow night (touch wood)

    Neil

  25. Steve Says:

My 2 teams are living in Germany so were leaving from there. Had months to sort a car and ended up doing nothing at all till today. Still, not a bad effort considering. Mercedes 190e, 1 stuck window and no aircon, awesome! Not much room for anything else than beer.
Really looking forward to some serious partying. See you all there!

  26. Andy (VBFG) Says:

    The Maps arrived woo hoo
3 eejuts on our way to Dover, now where is Lillie ???
We are on Dover to Calais about 14:00(ish) Steve what ferry are we on ?? so hopefully see a few other cars there.
Not sure if I’ll be able to sleep tonight – LOL

    Happy Days….

  27. Banger to the Future Says:

Car now packed FULL with stuff, for breakdowns and essentials!!!!! Missed items can be purchased along the way or borrwed off washing lines!!!! WE CAN’T WAIT TO GO NOW!!!!!!! We are setting off early doors, around 7am, heading down M6 then M40 then M25 then M20 “and then” (in chinese ordering voice as per dude i lost my car film” and then….and then….and then Dover!!! for the 2.30 sailing to Calias on P&O “pride of somehwere”. Hope to see you along our route so we won’t feel alone and feel embarassed cos we look like stupid idiots in a silly car…without our 70 team cars that is!!!!

    Mike & John
